Health condition
The ICF foresees consequences of a heath condition, or disease at 3 levels.
Body functions & structures
The Body component includes body functions and anatomical structures. Body functions are the physiological or psychological functions of the different body systems while body structures refer to the anatomic parts of the body such as organs, limbs and their components (e.g. a problem in this component may be a decrease in grip strength and an impaired hand).
Activity
The Activity component concerns the execution of a task or action by an individual (e.g. a problem in this component may be a difficulty in dressing after a wrist fracture).
Participation
The Participation component concerns the individual’s involvement in life situations (e.g. a problem in this component may be being excluded from social or professional activities).
Environmental factors
Environmental factors are external features of the physical, social, and attitudinal environment in which the individual lives. They may facilitate or hamper all components of functioning and disability (e.g. access to buildings, health policies).
Personal factors
Personal factors are internal features of the individual which are not part of a health condition. They may facilitate or hamper all components of functioning and disability (e.g. age, gender, lifestyle, motivation, compliance to treatment).
